Course description
Teaching Objectives:
- Introduce the fundamentals of conceptual design and critical thinking to students to produce a paradigm shift in the way students think, view the world, and view their role in the world.
- Introduce technical communication skills to permit students to work together and effectively express ideas in English.

Course structure:
ED 100 is structured to expose the students to three areas:
1. Design thinking and the design process
Lectures on the fundamentals of conceptual design will be given to introduce the synthesis aspect of engineering/science. Students will be asked to complete open-ended homework assignments to reinforce learning and give them an opportunity to practice what they have learned.
2. Effective technical communication
Students will have the opportunity to practice their written and verbal communication skills and receive feedback on communications related project assignments during weekly communication laboratory sessions.
3. Solving design problems in team environment
The students will be asked to undertake a term project as a team to learn about design and communication by doing it themselves. The term project will include weekly opened-ended homework assignments related to the term project. The final deliverables for the project will include a final report and poster.

Logistics and Weekly Schedule:
350 to 400 students will take this course per semester. For the lectures, the students will be divided into two groups of 200 (Group A and B). These lectures will cover the same course material but will be offered by different lecturers.
