Course Objectives
Introduce the fundamentals of conceptual design and critical thinking to students to produce a paradigm shift in the way students think, view the world, and view their role in the world.
Introduce technical communication skills to permit students to work together and effectively express ideas in English.
Provide an opportunity for students to learn more about engineering, science and technology and make a more informed decision about choice of major.

Course structure
ED100 is structured to expose the students to three areas:
1. Design thinking and the design process
Lectures on the fundamentals of conceptual design will be given to introduce the synthesis aspect of engineering/science. Students will be asked to complete open-ended homework assignments to reinforce learning and give them an opportunity to practice what they have learned.

2. Effective technical communication
Students will get lectures on fundamentals of technical communication and will have the opportunity to practice their written and verbal communication skills and receive feedback on communications related project assignments during weekly communication laboratory sessions.

3. Solving design problems in team environment
The students will be asked to undertake a term project as a team to learn about design and communication by doing it themselves. The term project will include weekly opened-ended homework assignments related to the term project. The final deliverables for the project will include a final report and poster.

Topics covered in the design lecture include:

What is Design?
Design Process Overview.
Problem Identification and Background Research.
The Customer Domain
The Functional Domain and Design Specifications
The Physical Domain and Design Concepts
Concept Testing, Selection, and Refinement
The Process Domain and Implementation
Special Guest Speaker on Intellectual Property in Korea and the US

Topics covered in the communication lecture include:

Team Work
Professional Communication
Background Research
Presentations and Oral Communication
Visual Communication
Written Communication

Language
ED100 is an English language based course. All lectures, laboratory sessions, assignments, meetings, and communications must be in English.

Text Book
Yarnoff, et al. Engineering Design and Communication: Principles and Practice
This book will be available at KAIST bookstore after 2/04/2009
Supplemental readings may also be assigned.

Logistics
Lecture
We have two design lecture sessions on Tuesday (Group A) and Wednesday (Group B). We also have two communication lecture sessions on Monday (Group A and B). You will belong to one of each group, and should attend your session. These lectures will cover the same course material but will be offered by different lecturers.

[Design Lecture]
Tuesday        4pm ? 6pm:     Professor Mary Kathryn Thompson
Wednesday    4pm ? 6pm:     Professor Taesik Lee

[Communication lecture]
Monday         3pm ? 4pm:     Professor George Furst
Wednesday    4pm ? 5pm:     Professor Declan Persram

Lectures are held in Room 304 of the Creative Learning Building (E11-304). Attendance is required. Design lecture attendance will be checked by your Project TA. Communication lecture attendance will be checked by the Communication TAs.

Labs
ED100 has two lab components: design project lab and communication lab. Design project labs are scheduled for Thursday afternoons at 4pm. Communication labs are held at various times from Mon evening ? Thursday morning. Attendance is required and will be checked.

Design Project Lab
Each design project team (4 ? 5 students) will meet with your Project Advisor and TA once a week. Thursday from 4pm ? 7pm is blocked for you to schedule project meetings with your Project Advisors. You will need to schedule exact time and place for project meetings with your Project Advisors.

Communication Lab
Each design project team (4-5 students) will also meet with their Communication Adviser once a week at their scheduled time. Later in the semester, communication laboratory sessions may be replaced by individual team meetings with their CA on an appointment basis.

The weekly schedule is shown below:

Information on Term Projects
A term-long design project is pursued by which you will reinforce what you learn during the lectures.
Projects will be evaluated based on both technical contents and written/verbal communication skills.

Project Advisors will offer you a wide range of project topics, and you will be assigned to one of the topics to work as a team (team of 4-5 students).

Each design team will have to produce three deliverables for their final project:
1. An oral presentation describing their design progress for the mid-term design review
2. A written paper describing their final design
3. A printed poster describing their final design

Additional deliverables may be required by the project advisor.

The teams must clearly communicate:
- The need for (significance of) their design - why ?
- The process used to develop their design - how ?
- The final design concept - what ?
- The results of the design (realized or expected benefits when compared to similar existing designs)
Each final design should be unique and represent a contribution to academia, industry or society in some way. We will ask: Is it New? Different? Better? - so what?

The final design should be robust (able continue to function properly under non-ideal conditions) and able to withstand scrutiny. We will ask: What if something goes wrong? What if the weather is bad? What if the user is not trained to use the product? - what if?

A design project that does not address all of these six criteria (What is it? How did you design it? Why was it needed? Is it new, different or better? How is it new, different or better? How will it perform if something goes wrong?) will not receive top marks in the grading even if the design concept or implementation itself is good.

Choosing Term Projects
Design project teams will be formed in the communication laboratory sessions during the first week of classes. Design projects will be presented by project advisers on Feb. 5 (Thursday) from 4-6pm in the KAIST Auditorium. Your team will submit exactly 5 desired project topics by 11:59PM on the same day (Thursday, 2/5/09). Each team will be assigned to a project based on the group member¡¯s preference. Assignments will be announced next Sunday (2/8/09).

Course evaluation
The final grades for the Freshman Design Class will be determined as follows:

Project Advisers Design Laboratory Grade 250 points 25%
Communication Advisers Communication Laboratory Grade 150 points 15%
Students Peer Review 100 points 10%
Course Coordinators Technical Evaluation of Final Project 200 points 20%
Final Paper 200 points 20%
Final Poster 100 points 10%
Total   1000 points 100%

Grading Note 1: A penalty of one letter grade will be applied for each course component that is not completed. For example, if the final paper is not turned in, the maximum grade that can be given is a B+. If the final paper and poster are not turned in, the maximum grade that can be given is a C+.

Grading Note 2: Failure to produce a unique design will result in a severe grading penalty. Each team must produce a different design and the final design must not already exist.

Course Ethics Policy:
KAIST and ED100 expect the highest levels of conduct from our students. Cheating, plagiarism and academic dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. All instances of academic misconduct should be reported immediately to the course coordinators and the KAIST Dean of Student Affairs. Academic dishonesty is punishable by a reduction in your overall grade for the course, by failing the course, or by expulsion from KAIST.

Course Website:
The ED100 course website is currently located at: http://freshmandesign.kaist.ac.kr/ and will be updated for the coming semester. The course website is primarily for visitors outside of KAIST and will not be used on a daily basis for the course.

Course Management Software: Moodle
Moodle online course management software will be used to distribute lecture notes, assign homework assignments, manage grades, permit discussion board activities, and more. The course Moodle site is located at: http://moodle.kaist.ac.kr/course/view.php?id=58.

Announcements, lecture notes, assignments, discussion boards, and other activities that are important for you will be posted on the main course Moodle page. Please check this page regularly for news and uploads. In addition, each project will have its own project Moodle page where you can upload homework and participate in project-specific discussions.
